Holiday in Urumqi

One of the reasons we have to stay here so long in Urumqi is because this week there is a 3 day holiday. It is something similar to our Memorial Day where they pay homage to their deceased relatives.

The holiday slows down the processing of Liddia's passport, and we have to have her passport before we leave. We told our guide Jenny that we didn't need her help on Sunday since we were just going to rest and watch conference. Between conference sessions I took a walk outside our hotel. (It is tough to be stuck in a hotel room all day!)

Wow! I had no idea there was so much going on outside! The streets were packed with people buying, selling, eating, etc. It looked like thousands of people. For me it was a fascinating experience walking the streets observing all the people and their local holiday customs.

This is one of the videos is shot while walking down the street. I took it while walking, so it is a bit jerky.

Here are some shots I took of the holiday festivities in the streets outside our hotel room.

  1. I just wanted to send a quick thank you! With all that you are doing I am amazed and grateful that you have taken the time to post about your trip. Our class loves looking at the pictures while I read your posts out loud. Drew is able to make comments and hear his classmates talk about his new sister and your experiences.
I wish you a quick, safe trip home with Liddia. She is an adorable new addition to your family!

  2. I am not sure how much things have changed since Thom was there but I remember him sending pictures home about this holliday. They honor their dead by burning things they need such as money (fake) food (fake but looks like it) clothing, paper and even small paper furniture. I wondered if they were doing simular things. Mom
