That means we will be here in Urumqi until Thursday. That is a long time stuck in a hotel room in a place where you cannot understand anyone and no one can understand you. There isn't even anything on TV that we can understand, they obviously don't get a large contingent of American tourists here in Urumqi.
When they do get Americans they relish it...well, at least one fellow here does. I was trying to familiarize myself with where the food service is here in the hotel when a kind hotel worker came up to me and said in his broken English, “what country?” When I said “USA” he didn’t understand and looked confused, so I said “American”, then he gave me the thumbs up and started singing the Star Spangled Banner, it was quite humorous.
He tried to help me find what I needed and then as I was getting on the elevator he again broke out in another beautiful rendition of the Star Spangled Banner. I again gave him the "thumbs up".
Tonight I went out and walked around the streets of Urumqi for a few minutes. I find it fascinating. A few months ago I didn’t even know there was such a place as Urumqi China, now I am here walking the streets. I really enjoy taking in the sights and sounds of this place.
Here are a few random pictures from our travels to and from government offices and my adventures walking the streets to get out of the hotel room now and then.
What an amazing experience!
